Breaking the Cycle: The Benefits of Methadone Treatment
Addiction can seem like a dark cloud is over you, and that you are alone in your struggles. What most people don't know is that there are thousands of other people going through the same struggles, and are closer than they think. In 2015, around 21,000 adolescents had used heroin in the past 12 months, and about 5,000 were regularly using heroin. Also, about 6,000 adolescents had a heroin use disorder in 2014. In fact, an estimate says that 23% of people who use heroin develop opioid addiction.
If you are addicted to heroin or addicted to opioids, you are not alone, and you can get help. Methadone addiction treatment centers offer effective addiction treatments.
Many members of "old school" generations will insist that nothing works at treating addiction except for quitting "Cold turkey". Chances are, most heroin and opioid addicts have already tried this method. However, this method of heroin treatment has not been proven to work. In fact, the opposite is true. Rehab methods that rely on abstinence (Quitting "Cold turkey") are non-medical and only succeed about 5% to 10%. Many people who are addicted and try this method feel ashamed when it doesn't work. They believe that they are weak due to their lack of "will power". Asking someone to "Just stop" being addicted to drugs is like asking someone with pneumonia "Have you tried not having pneumonia?" Just as someone cannot "quit" having pneumonia, it is very difficult for someone to quit using drugs with no help at all (Just like it is hard to kick any other serious, life threatening disease without medication).
Methadone is a scientifically proven method of drug addiction treatment. According to research, Methadone has been proven to be more effective than any other form of treatment for opioid addiction. However, in 2011, a study by SAMHSA
(Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) showed that only about 270,000 people (As opposed to the 2 million people that suffered from a heroin use disorder in 2015) were receiving methadone treatment at that time.
