Fentanyl And Other Drug-Related Deaths Are On The Rise

Fentanyl, a dangerous drug that's 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times more potent than morphine, is behind a growing number of deaths across the nation. According to the Louisville Courier Journal, fentanyl has contributed to up to 763 deaths in the state of Kentucky in 2017.

That's more than double the number of deaths caused by heroin in Kentucky that same year. But fentanyl isn't the only drug that's been causing bigger problems.

Fatal Overdoses On The Rise

Although fentanyl was responsible for hundreds of deaths in 2017, three other drugs were also responsible for more deaths than heroin. One drug, known as "ice," is a pure form of crystal methamphetamines.

Heroin included, fatal overdoses have skyrocketed since 2016. The rate has increased by more than 11% in Kentucky alone.

Approximately 22% of fatal overdoses were attributed to heroin. Another 31% were attributed to gabapentin, a drug that had previously been considered a safe alternative to opioid painkillers.

Rachel Vickers Smith, an assistant professor at the University of Louisville School of Nursing, says it isn't likely that gabapentin was the sole cause of the overdose. More powerful drugs such as fentanyl, heroin, and cocaine were also detected in the patients who overdosed on gabapentin.

The University of Louisville released a statement back in February cautioning Americans against the abuse of prescription painkillers that have gone unnoticed in the midst of the opioid epidemic.

One prescription painkiller that's been seeing abuse is Neurontin. But some anti-anxiety medications like Alprazolam are also noted to be lethal when combined with addiction treatment medications.

"[The death toll] underscores just how much is at stake," said Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin. "This is a fight we must win for the sake of our families, our communities, and the [state] as a whole."

Fortunately, medications used to reverse the effects of a drug overdose have become increasingly available to the public and methadone treatment centers are available to those suffering from addiction.
